The "Angel Team" that plans and serves funeral receptions at Christ Church is in need of a few more people for its pool of willing workers who can be called on with little notice to help put together a simple stand up meal after services at the church. If you are a person - male or female - who is willing to be on an e-mail list that gets a notice when your help is needed, please call or write Louise Bower (742-1729 / leb204@fuse.net) and let her know. A few more willing workers would increase the pool of potential help and prevent overworking a few people when others are unavailable. Is this ministry for you? We have started with some books that our Priest, Roger has read lately and is recommending. Just click on any of them and this will link you to the Amazon.com web site. (See Bottom of Page) Once there you can shop as you normally would, and when you make your purchase we get 4% credited to our account. What could be easier! Happy reading.

Christ Church Glendale Member SpotlightMargaret Mock Margaret Mock has been an active part of our church community for 26 years, joining us upon her marriage to Bryan (Dr. Mock, our Director of Music). Her service to our parish has included being a past Church School instructor, past Education Director (before this was a paid position), and past member of the Education Commission. Her most prominent current contribution is as the founder, coordinator and hostess of our Book Club, which will start another year of lively discussions in September. She is also a member of the English Handbell Choir, an IHN volunteer, and the coordinator of receptions after Evensongs. After growing up in Jackson, Michigan, Margaret studied early childhood education at Hillsdale College and finished her Bachelor's degree in art education at Western Michigan University (where she and Bryan met). In 2005, she obtained an M.A. degree in classroom education through online coursework from the University of Rio Grande in Ohio. An important formative experience during her college years was the semester she took off and helped her brother build a cabin in Alaska, surviving winter months there with no electricity or running water. Turning this challenge into an opportunity, Margaret retains her enjoyment of the winter camping and kayaking skills she learned then, and states that winter is still her favorite season. A true Michigander! After teaching for 15 years in the Princeton City Schools (particularly as a traveling art teacher among the Glendale, Heritage Hill, Lincoln Heights and Springdale schools), Margaret has spent the most recent 10 years of her career teaching art in the Indian Hill School District to children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. She particularly delights in studying art history and turning her learning into units of study that even the youngest can appreciate. Margaret's other hobbies include gardening and walking (especially to look at gardens!). She and Bryan enjoy their two sons, Joseph (age 22) and Eli (age 19), who are both completing their education at the University of Cincinnati. Margaret's life in education of varied forms has certainly been part of helping others to find their destinies. Margaret's advice to us is to look for God at work in our lives, even in the smallest things, because He is there, leading us to who we are meant to be. Roger's recommended reading Alexander Hamilton: Ron Chernov This endorsement from Joseph J. Ellis, another writer for whom I have great respect: A robust, full length portrait, in my view the best ever written, of the most brilliant, charismatic, and dangerous founder of them all. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelts darkest journey: Candice Millard This is a totally engrossing story of an expedition Roosevelt lead down a newly discovered and untraveled tributary of the Amazon River. Incredible story of adventure, hardship and perseverance which nearly led to his suicide. It is a wonderful look into the heart and soul of our 26th president. Couldn't put it down. Patches of Godlight: Jan Karon This book was given to me by Joe Snavely as a Christmas gift a few years back. Father Tim Cavanagh, the hero of Jan Karon's Mitford Series was an avid reader. When he came across something that spoke to his heart he would write it down in a diary. Jan has reproduced it here. It consists of brief, often spiritual, insights from history's great minds. I recommend it for the morning for a thought for the day. Live with each one for a day. You may find yourself a changed person. |
