Parish Prayer

Gracious God, thank you for hearing our prayers and blessing our Christ Church Glendale family.  By your spirit, guide, strengthen, and fashion our lives according to the example of your son, Jesus, that we may be faithful witnesses of your love.  Amen.

Worship

Christ Church Glendale
offers three worship services each Sunday. Each service features a printed program to simplify participation by the congregation. Healing prayer for those who desire it is offered at all services on the first and third Sundays of the month. A brief description of our Sunday services as well as those offered on weekdays follows:

Sunday Services
8:00 a.m.
The 8:00 a.m. celebration of Holy Eucharist is held in the main church. The language of this service retains much of the flavor of the original when the Book of Common Prayer was first drafted in 1549. It is a quiet and more reflective worship. Lasting about forty minutes, there is no music and the sermon is briefer than at the later services.

9:00 a.m.
The setting for the 9:00 a.m. service is in All Saints Chapel at the north end of the lower level. The worship is less formal than at either the 8:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. service.

The youth choir bolsters our congregational singing. The basic “rule of thumb” here is to stand for prayer and song and sit to listen. Participation by all is the norm with people taking turns in making homemade bread for communion. Communion itself is a sharing process. People gather in two semi-circles around which the bread is passed. Chalice bearers follow with the wine. The children come to the center of the chapel where each receives a blessing from the priest. In the summer, weather permitting, the service is held outside in the garden.

11:00 a.m.
The 11:00 a.m. celebration of Holy Eucharist is held in the main church. The worship space is surrounded in wood paneling and stained glass portrayals of events in the life of Jesus. The service features a sung Eucharist, with a full choir, processions, ushers, acolytes, and sermon. Depending on the season, Rite 1 or the more contemporary Rite 2 is used, offering the congregation a variety of worship experiences. During the summer months, this service is held at 10:00 a.m.

Weekday Services
7:00 a.m. Wednesdays

This is a quiet, reflective, yet informal service which takes place in the "children’s chapel" adjacent to the main church. The chapel, once the kitchen and parish hall for the church, was transformed into a chapel with children in mind. When you enter, note that each stained glass window has a children’s theme.

The service is a Holy Eucharist (communion service). We often celebrate the ministries of important people in the history of the church from founders to mystics to martyrs. The homily will use their lives to instruct and inspire our own. The service is usually over by 7:30 a.m. This is a wonderful mid-week spiritual pick-me-up.

Holy Eucharist Rite 2 and Healing
7:00 p.m. First Wednesday of the month

This service takes place in the chapel adjacent to the main church. It includes a liturgy for healing. At the designated time those who wish may come to the rail for laying on of hands and anointing with oil. Individuals frequently offer the name of friends and loved ones for whom prayer is requested. We then center around God’s table and share in his Holy Supper. The service is informal and lasts about 30 minutes.

Evensong
5:00 p.m. One Sunday a month, October through March

The service of Evensong is unique to the Episcopal Church. The Evensong service does not usually include preaching, but does include beautiful music and prayers for the end of the day offered to the glory of God and for our inspiration. We are pleased to present the beautiful service of Evensong in the Anglican tradition, with some innovations. Evensong is offered monthly from October through March; each service begins at 5:00 p.m., and concludes with fellowship in the Olivia House parish hall. Childcare is available at all of the services. You are encouraged to attend these special worship services with family and friends.  For this year's schedule, see the Evensong Page.
